Stoney Cove - The UK's Main inland dive site.

Postby bubbler » Wed Jan 04, 2012 9:07 am

This would be nice to see. It is one of the main places in england (Most experienced divers call it the Disneyland of diving) It contains multiple wrecks, It has been used for the testing of advanced ROVs, SDVs etc. Here is some info I have dug up (will update as I find more):

Very Interesting.
Would you like to help us in gathering more data and/or contacting the right people?
As an example, the report mentions:
8.3. Virtual Visualisation of a Submerged Quarry
The ‘heritage trail’ suggested above has the disadvantage of restricting knowledge
only to those capable of physically diving the site. This report has stressed the sites
importance not only to the diving community but also to the local and area
communities as an example of their past. Yet only those qualified can visit it. Three
years ago a proposal was formulated between Advanced Underwater Surveys Ltd
(ADUS), the NAS and NDC for a detailed swath bathymetry survey of Stoney Cove.
The resultant survey could be transposed into a video image allowing a virtual
‘swimthrough’ of the entire site. Embedded with the survey would be ‘still’ and video
images taken as part of this project. Through internet technology this visualisation
would be available to a huge audience, local, national and international. It would be
available for educational purposes – not just at local school level, but also to colleges
etc with regard to environmental, demographic & business studies. For the diving
community it would provide an ideal safety and briefing tool enabling dive planning to
be undertaken prior to arrival at the site.

Is the bathymetry dataset mentioned above available?
.... eDiving would be perfect for this ;)

Actually, in the past, I did already contact - several times - the folks at ADUS ...... with no success.
They never responded .... Maybe if you contact them you might be more lucky.

Who owns Stoney Cove? Maybe we could have a better chance that route.
