Planning repetitive dives with divePAL iPad

Postby eDiver » Wed Apr 09, 2014 2:43 pm

While divePAL Windows allows to plan dives in 3 different ways: 1) Iterative, 2) Max Depth, and 3) Max Time (see this post for more info), as of today, divePAL iPad supports only the iterative method.

Let's demonstrate it using the same example we used for divePAL Windows: we will make a two-tank boat dive to be performed in Cozumel. Our first dive will be at the Devil’s Throat dive site. Then, after a surface interval of 1 hour, we will perform a second dive at the dive site Columbia Shallow.

To create dive 1 we could either enter it manually or we could use a dive profile of a real dive.
Let's use a real dive.
From the main screen tap on Plan, then tap on Start from Existing Profile

Image

Then tap on the search icon, tap on Search Logs and set the search filters to: All Real Dives, All Users, 1/1/2000 to today, Devil's Throat, Everywhere ... and then tap on Search.

Image

Now tap on the dive log you want to use and divePAL will load its profile....

Image

Now tap on Select... and the tap on Analyze .... once divePAL has completed the Analysis tap on Save Log

Image

We are almost done with the plan for the first dive. You might want to give it a name and add location, then tap on Save then OK.

Image

Our first dive is done!
Tap on Log to go to the dive logs screen, then tap on Local Logs and the plan for the first dive should be there ;)

Image

Now, let's plan the second dive.
Tap on Plan to go back to the planning screen, then tap on Clear .... then enter the data for the plan such as Max Depth, Dive Time, Tank being used, SAC and Gas Mix ..

Image

Then tap on Draw Dive Profile and tap on the plot area to draw the profile of dive 2.
Once you are satisfied with it tap on Analyze and then tap on Save Log.

Image

As we did before, You might want to name this log and assign to it a location, then tap on Save then OK.

We are almost done.
Tap on Log to go to the dive logs screen, then tap on Local Logs and both dives should be there ;)

Now, we need to put the 2 dives in the proper sequence with a 1 hour surface interval between them.

Open dive 1, change Start Time to 9:30 AM (It takes quite some time on the boat to reach this dive site from our hotel :D ) and write down the End Time (it should be 10:16 AM).

Image

Now open log 2 and change Start Time to 11:16 AM (so we have 1 hour surface interval between the 2 dives).

Image

Now scroll down and tap on the dive profile.

Image

divePAL should show a message indicating that this dive is part of a sequence and allows you to select / deselect which dives you want to include in the analysis.
Tap on Analyze

Image

Once divePAL has completed the analysis it will show the results for this dive.
The analysis takes in consideration the previous dive and the surface interval.
divePAL will also indicate that this dive is the second dive of a sequence of 2 dives.

In Iterative mode you use the analyzer to check the nitrogen loading levels and the dive profile editor to adjust the shape of the dives.
If you do not like the values of Nitrogen loading that you see at the end of the sequence of dives (either because they are too high, or too low, or because you went into deco), then you go back to each log and edit the corresponding dive profile (and/or you change the surface interval ... and/or the gas mix).
You repeat this process until you are satisfied with the end result.

Very important note: you can create sequences of dives ONLY for LOCAL LOGS!

One final note.
Once you are done planning your repetitive dives, make sure to name your plans, save them and upload them to the divePAL cloud so your buddies (or your students if you are an Instructor) can use them too.
